Mount Darwin is a village in Mashonaland Central province in Zimbabwe. It is named after the biologist Charles Darwin. It is located 156 kilometres north of Harare.


History

Mount Darwin is the probable site of some of the earliest European missionary work in southern Africa, by the Portuguese Jesuit Gonçalo da Silveira, who arrived in 1560 and was killed in March 1561 near Mount Darwin following a souring of relations with the local chief. [1]


Karanda

Karanda Mission Hospital is literally the lifeblood of the town. Karanda provides care not only for the the local region, but for Harare as well. Two American surgeons perform 3000 surgeries there a year. Overall the hospital sees nearly 90,000 patients a year. [2]
